Why Your Zerodha P&L Might Be Misleading

If you've ever checked your Zerodha Console and seen a P&L figure, you might think you know how well you're doing. But here's the truth: that number doesn't account for timing.

Making ₹50,000 profit over 5 years is very different from making ₹50,000 in 6 months. That's where XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) comes in—it calculates your annualized return, accounting for when you invested and when you sold.

💡 What is XIRR?

XIRR is the annualized rate of return that makes the net present value of all cash flows equal to zero. In simple terms: it's your "true" yearly return, adjusted for the timing of your investments.

Step 1: Download Your Zerodha Tradebook

  1. Log in to Zerodha Console
  2. Go to Reports → Tradebook
  3. Select the date range (we recommend "All time" or at least 1 year)
  4. Click Download and choose CSV format

⚠️ Pro Tip

Download the complete tradebook, not just P&L. The tradebook contains individual trades with dates, which is required for accurate XIRR calculation.

Step 2: Upload to TrueXIRR

  1. Go to TrueXIRR.com
  2. Select Zerodha as your broker
  3. Upload the CSV file you just downloaded
  4. Your XIRR will be calculated instantly!
